Writing Sample: Short Story Excerpt

Shifter Sister follows the predicament of a sister navigating society as a shapeshifter while the other tries to balances her responsibilities.

Shifter Sister

Your sister is a shapeshifter, she can change into almost any animal out there. When she does it though she is stuck as that animal for at least a week and up to a month sometimes more. She also shifts involuntarily whenever she feels scared. Problem is, she is scared and startled by almost anything and everything. So almost every week you wake up to a random animal on your doorstep. You always get asked if you work for a zoo. And is sometimes found walking around with a mythical creature on you. Yeah, you love your sister.

“What the heck? No. NO. You can’t have coffee, that’s bad for you.” She held her iced coffee out of reach of the little dragonet curled around her neck. “You remember the last time it happened, you kept bouncing everywhere the whole day and you had a stomach ache for a week afterwards. No.”

The sunlight spilled from curtains, hitting her face. She pulled the warm covers over her head against the light of the cold Saturday morning. She sighed in contentment.

Scratching at the door broke through the tranquil morning. She tried to ignore it. Whatever it was though just continued scratching louder. Groaning, she pulled herself out of her warm, comfortable bed. She pulled on a loose sweater from a hook, as she walked to the door of her apartment.

She opened her door to find a big fluffy puppy. A fluffy puppy that was wearing her little sister’s animal collar. The collar that she always disguised as a choker or a necklace in case she shifted on accident.

“It happened again didn’t it?” The puppy whined and looked down in embarrassment.

Writing Sample: Polished Paragraph - Surrealism

Surrealist styled paragraph questioning the results of a car crash.

When a car topples over a cliff what position do you want to be in? The vehicle, you sit in, slipping down a cliff. Brown brush and terrible trees tearing at the paint of the car, piercing its pretty exterior. The tumble unstoppable, unchangeable. Raving, ranting, calling, crying, listened by time-worn friendships. The music releases everything. An overachiever reading every fine print. Cards held close, friends farther. Their trapped shimmering tears pouring with each perceived failure, every realized rejection. The pain of perfection pinning them in the branches, the ruby ribbons hanging among them. Vital liquid lighting, flickering fires flying. What is left of them? What position does any good? The tumble still happens, the body remains strung, the ribbons continue flowing.
